10-Year-Old Climbs 5.14a
By Rocky Thompson on March 13th, 2013Ten-year-old Jonathan Hörst has climbed a 5.14a route in Kentucky called God’s Own Stone. It is unclear whether the name of the route is ironic or not since it’s in Kentucky. Hörst is the latest child prodigy to climb extraordinarily difficult grades that are well over his age. Hey parents, what happened to forcing your kid into gymnastics? Someone needs to tell them that climbing isn’t even an official Olympic sport yet. On a serious note, congrats to Hörst on his accomplishment of a lifetime. I will watch you and all the other 10-year-olds in the Olympics in 20 years.

Stories like this annoy the hell out of me… Of course he can climb hard routes because he is 75 lbs. Wait until his body has fully developed and he has some extra bulk to tote around. Report on what he is climbing when he is 25…
Well.. that’s true Mike. But… I know many 10-year-olds who wouldn’t be able to climb a 5.14 (or even a 5.10 for that matter). Still takes some cajones, strength and skilzz….Go Jonathan!
Careful! This type of story annoys the hell out of Mike.
Mike, the problem is that a young, undeveloped body is more likely to sustain long-term injuries, and possibly experience stunted growth.
While I might choose to be trapped forever in a body that’s able to climb a 5.14, these children aren’t in a position to make that choice in an informed way.
