Hiking the AT (With an Inoperable Brain Tumor)

In February 2012 Bill Powel was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. His doctors say he’ll have 3 to 5 years of medicine-controlled symptoms before things “started to go south.” In his words: “So with that diagnosis I decided to “go south” a little earlier.”

He’s planning to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail southbound, going from Mount Katahdin to Spring Mountain in Georgia, finishing in November. His plan is to write a book after the journey, and on the way he’ll be posting to The Dusty Camel. To fund his trip, he started a Kickstarter page that hit the $6,000 goal with plenty of time to go.
