The Ski Industry is Making Lots of Money
By Rocky Thompson on January 10th, 2011The Snowsports Industries America (SIA) released their early season sales reports, and it appears that snow is good for the snowsport business. What’s most interesting is that the backcountry movement continues to see explosive growth. Alpine touring gear sales are up 70% from last year, and boot sales are up 122%. More backcountry users might mean your secret powder stashes are in danger, but it also means more people will get involved in land use arguments and, in general, the world is becoming a slightly cooler, healthier place.
More trends:
- 56,345 Alpine ski systems with waists 70-79mm were sold by November 30, a 43% increase in units sold
- Reverse camber snowboard sales are up 60% in units and reverse camber ski sales are up 130% to more than 18,600 units sold season to-date
- Snowboard sales are up 13% in units and 19% in dollars sold, a solid turnaround from last season’s relatively dismal sales
- Telemark equipment was the only equipment category in the red through November losing 12% in dollars and 18% in units sold
- Snowboard apparel tops up 19% in dollars sold
- Glove sales increased 26% in dollars and 24% in units sold
- Goggles sales surged up 46% in units sold to 360,000 pairs
- Carryover sales are down 14% overall in specialty

Also Greg Hill made the 2 mil mark a while ago. you should changer your banner to something along the lines of… Greg Hill, making the the rest of us look like wimps!
43% increase in 70-79mm waist skis? That sounds like a bubble to me. Or growth. Call it what you will.
^ ^ Or a bunch of people held off buying their dream skis while the financial system/economy was imploding. Should settle down next year.
That guy in the picture can’t ski to save his ass. I know him and he sucks.
