Climbers on Mt Rainer thought they found a powerful image of the impact of global warming when they summited and saw a survey marker sticking out of the melted ice. The maker was put on Ranier in 1956 and eventually covered by snow. The only problem is that the marker was pounded into the rock at the crater’s rim about 200 feet below the summit back then. Climbers shot images of the marker melting out of the ice and sent it to the climate change site 350.org, who promptly used the image to illustrate the effects of Hummer driving and golf courses. Of course, the mountain’s glaciers are actually all receding in spite of whether or not people are hauling 50’s era survey signs to the top. Hopefully that message doesn’t get lost in the confusing, melted mountain hoax.
