Going to Tiny Jackson

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Ride up the tiny tram and shred tiny lines. Last one down has to buy the first round of tiny beers. You can actually let this thing load up and watch it in HD for extra-fun tininess. It all looks so easy from way up here.

Thanks Kyle

First Sit-Skier to Hit Corbet’s Couloir

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Sit-skier Chris Devlin-Young wrote a firsthand account over at Teton AT of his dropping into Jackson Hole’s famous Corbet’s Couloir run a few days ago. Ski Patrol let him and a few friends setup early at the top of Corbet’s on the day after a storm dropped 14 inches of snow. He’s the first sit-skier to make an unaided descent of Corbet’s. It sounds like the hardest part was getting through the deep snow at the top. Well, that and the 30-foot drop.

Oil Drilling Near Grand Teton

Thursday, March 10th, 2011
From Teton AT

Photo from Teton AT

If you’d prefer to keep Grand Teton wild, you might want to take a moment to comment on a proposal to expand Wyoming oil and gas drilling to within view of the mountain. Alternatively if you prefer post-apocalyptic landscapes like those seen in science fiction movies, you might also want to suggest they expand drilling. The Feds are asking people what they think of allowing 136 new gas wells as well as a lot of development to store the gas and truck it out. To comment, you have to email the Bridger Teton National Forest Supervisor. Her name is Jacqueline Buchanan, and her email address is: Comments-intermtn-bridger-teton-big-piney@fs.fed.us. If you’re interested, Teton AT also went to the trouble of posting a form letter you can drop into your email to make things easy.

The commenting period ends tomorrow. (Sorry for the short notice, but you probably would have procrastinated anyway.)

Jackson Hole Drops Charges on 78-year-old Uphill Skier

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Jackson Hole Resort will not press charges on a 78-year-old man who was arrested at the hill recently. His crime?

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort officials said Ronald Fleck was arrested Feb. 5 after ski patrol members spent 3 ½ hours attempting to convince the man to turn around while he was trying to ski uphill to watch his granddaughter’s ski race, the Jackson Hole Daily reported Monday.

I absolutely love how Ronald Fleck would not just turn around and ski back down the hill, and he forced ski patrol to argue with him for three-and-a-half hours. And then when he still wouldn’t turn around, the police had to be called in to drag this senior off the slopes. Way to stick with it, Ronald. Sure, Jackson isn’t pressing charges, but that’s the least they could do…actually, on second thought, the least they could have done was to just let him ski up and see his granddaughter’s ski race.

Jail Time for Hiker Who Sprayed Bear in Trap

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

A budding serial killer in Jackson Hole is going to jail for two days after unloading a can of bear spray on a bear caught inside a live trap. Tyler Steele sprayed the 177-pound bear caught in a culvert trap, and after he was caught pled guilty. His punishment includes about $1000 in fines and the two days in jail. I don’t know if they’ve told him yet that the bear will also be in his jail cell those two days.

Wyoming Sells Feds Land Inside Teton National Park for $107 Million

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

The state of Wyoming made a tidy profit on a chunk of land inside Grand Teton National Park. The Feds will pay $107 million for 1,366 acres of land that the federal government gave them in 1890. They got the land as a condition of statehood and planned on using it to provide revenue for their schools. Turns out that land wasn’t getting them much, until now. They’d been threatening to sell it to an outside developer to try to strong arm the Dept of the Interior into coughing up the dough. It seems to have worked.

Jackson Hole’s Biggest Ever Opening Weekend

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

One of these guys had been in the tram line since 11:30pm Opening Day’s Eve. I don’t understand why he didn’t just start walking to the top of the hill at 11:30pm and then get the first run off the tramdock right as the first tram was pulling in. Regardless, looks like the Wyoming season’s off to a good start.

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Folks who live on the other side of the pass and ski Targhee will get their own gate this year. Skiers will be able to legally cross the rope to access National Park land and get after some fresh snow. Targhee also added a Beacon Farm where people can practice finding buried avalanche beacons.

Burton’s ‘The Stash’ Sets Up in Jackson Hole

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Every year the massive snowboard company Burton partners with a ski resort to build a new terrain park. These parks are referred to as ‘The Stash,’ and they mostly rely on indigenous materials and features that are augmented into a cohesive park run by the Burton crew. While this is somewhat interesting in itself, the story gets even better when you hear about one of the people they hired to help - chainsaw artist Bob King. This is the guy you see on TV whenever you spend a hungover afternoon watching lumberjack competitions. Apparently he turned 50 trees into chainsaw sculptures. It’s going to be like riding through the Hall of Presidents in Disney.
