Search for Missing Wingsuiter Cancelled

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

Mount Si outside of Seattle isn’t what most hikers or backpackers would consider real wilderness, but Kurt Ruppert Jr., of Lake City, Florida, a wingsuit flyer who made a jump five days ago from a helicopter at 6,500 feet, is still missing somewhere in the area. And after four days of searching in a nine-mile [ more... ]

Wingsuit Flyers Buzz Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia

Monday, November 5th, 2012

Two guys from the Red Bull crew somehow convinced Malaysia’s government to let them fly past the iconic Petronas Twin Towers in their wingsuits. Money conquers all, I suppose. I wonder how many people working in their offices in the towers saw the guys fly past and thought they were witnessing a couple jumpers.

New Goggles for Wingsuit Pilots Offer Direct-to-Eye-Display

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Wingsuit pilot extraordinaire Jeb Corliss is testing a new goggle made by Recon Instruments that shows speed, hang time, and angle of flight. It’s intended for BASE jumpers and people jumping off cliffs while wearing wingsuits. I suppose the LCD might get in your way of actually seeing the ground, but if that happens and [ more... ]

New Base Jump World Record

Friday, June 8th, 2012

It took Valery Rozov a month in the Indian Himalaya to prepare for this base jump with the last six days spent climbing and the last 90 seconds spend descending. His climbing partners took three more days to get back down. I’m sure they were kicking themselves for not packing wingsuits.

Wingsuit Water Crash

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

It’s confirmed that BASE jumper Christopher Brewer survived this 876-foot drop in a wingsuit even though his chute didn’t open. They estimate he was going between 60 and 80mph when he hit the water. The 27-year-old was part of a Bridge Day event and it’s estimated that there were 100,000 people there during the course of the day. That’s quite a few onlookers. The jumper suffered a broken pelvis, lung injuries and a spinal injury. One thing you have to hand it to the guy for – he held the panic at bay and used his wingsuit to slow him down as much as he could even though the chute didn’t open.

Jeb Corliss Flies Through Chinese Cave in Wingsuit

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Watch a news anchor struggle to find something to talk about while Jeb Corliss flies through a cave in China. I suppose it’s more of an ‘arch’ than a cave but I’m not going to argue with the guy who was close enough to high-five a member of his ground crew on his last YouTube video. The anchor keeps saying it was his “second attempt.” Since he survived to make that second attempt we can assume that his first attempt did not include him coming into contact with the ground without deploying a parachute first.

“Grind The Crack” An Impressive and Impressively Named Wingsuit Flight

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

It takes a confident person to name their death defying wingsuit flight ‘Grind the Crack.’ Jeb Corliss is just such a man. He flies within feet of the ground and even convinces one of his friends to stand close enough to his flight path to hand him some nice balloons.

Dean Potter Birthday Wingsuit Flight

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Stick around for this entire video. The beginning feels like your normal wingsuit jump, but then you realize how far out he’s flying and it’s impressive. Thinking of wingsuit jumps as ‘average’ just seems inappropriate. This video went up on the prAna blog last week.

Wingsuit Flyby

Monday, April 11th, 2011

The only thing that could have made this video better would have been if one of the people reached up to give the BASE jumpers a high-five but the jumpers stole their beer instead. The clip comes from a Norwegian TV show called “Oppdrag Sognefjorden,” and based on their website, it looks like a Norwegian version of Nitro Circus except with more skiing and less trucks. Norway just got a little bit cooler.

Backcountry.com Athlete Steph Davis is brave. Not only does her gear get crossed up on the first jump in this video, which she handles without problem, but she’s bold enough to wear those glasses. Not many are brave enough to have that much style. Also, the wingsuit flying she’s doing in this video is insane.
