Video: Everest 50 Years Ago

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

The original Americans on Everest expedition 30 years ago was sponsored by Rainer beer (yes!) and a cigarette brand I won’t mention, only because I don’t want them to ride out that sponsorship any further. It was also sponsored by National Geographic, who gave us the above video. I love the disparaging tone these guys take to modern Everest climbers. You can’t blame them, but keep in mind that they did rely heavily on porters to carry tons of gear to basecamp. Of course, they didn’t clip in and follow lines laid all the way to the summit. And if you’re feeling nostalgic about your mountaineering or you just want to get some cool hipster clothing ideas, you should check out this historic photo gallery over at Outside.

Strange Ice Happenings in Minnesota

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

The land of strange, fast-changing weather managed another oddity: chandeliering ice. It seems that the super cool water and high winds created the perfect conditions for shards of ice to grow and quickly pile up on the shore of Medicine Lake in Plymouth, Minnesota. A woman with a smartphone camera managed to shoot a video of the phenomenon, which is seldom observed in nature.

Death Valley Dreamlapse

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

I loved Death Valley Dreamlapse, but at the end I found it left so many questions unanswered. Well, there’s a sequel out, and I think you’ll find it wraps up the whole story quite nicely. Will they get the tent up at night? Will the guy with the headlamp walk around? Does the Earth rotate? All of these questions and more are answered in Death Valley Dreamlapse 2. The video comes to us from the Sunchaser Pictures team, who remind us that no special effects or photo enhancing was done. Best viewed fullframe/HD with headphones/mushrooms on.

Idiot on Motorcycle Crashes into Cyclists

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

A guy on a motorcycle rode down two cyclists in California. One went to the hospital and the other rode away. It’s the most bizarre video you’ll see all day. The guy seems to take the turn too wide and doesn’t realize he’s about to run two people over until he’s inches off the guy’s back wheel. Why they have such great footage of the accident is interesting to ponder. It seems the area’s known as a spot for motorcycle riders to show off, perhaps some amateur photographer likes to film them. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s any kind of fallout for the guy on the motorcycle, or if the police just say it’s no one’s fault like normal.

River Boarding Over Waterfalls is Rather Aggressive

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Kayaking over waterfalls is cool, but you know what’d be better? Going over headfirst. This must have been the logic of river boarder Josh Galt when he took the plunge over Gorilla on the Green River Narrows near Ashville, North Carolina. It’s a rather narrow part of the river, but he makes it look easy. Next up, going over in a barrel.

Short Ski and Snowboard Film: Restless

Friday, April 26th, 2013

At the World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler one prize is reserved for a film shot within seven days, featuring at least one skier and snowboarder, and combining video from different regions of Whistler. This year Leo Zuckerman won with Restless, it features a voiceover we’ve heard a few other times on popular videos this year. A great short video, and a genius marketing move for Whistler; they get to add some fantastic footage to the video/marketing library in exchange for a cash prize.

Being Eddy Merckx

Friday, April 26th, 2013

I have no idea what this fantastic advertisement is trying to sell, but if anyone speaks Dutch let me know so I can buy 10 of them. According to Google Translate the video is called “In Wheel Eddy Merckx,” but Being Eddy makes much more sense. It’s so odd that cycling videos never got the nostalgia treatment until now.

Eric Pollard POV Skiing: From Nimbus Independent

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Mt. Hood native Eric Pollard (no relation to Robert Pollard) filed this mash-up of POV footage you’ll find inspiring as we slowly make our way into spring. Plenty of snow at Mt Hood, huh? The footage from Nimbus Independent mixes it up: natural features, powder, big lines, and the park. Nice local flavor featured at the end of the film, too.

Walking a Massive High Line in Moab

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Over the course of a week Andy Lewis and crew setup on the world’s longest freestanding tower highline across Moab’s Raptor Tower. The 262ft line was walked during the winter in frigid conditions, and it took about a week to setup and complete without falling. The aerial shots were provided via a helicopter drone, and offer some great looks at the spectacular scenery they enjoyed while walking the line.

Terrible Ideas in Motion: A 14.5ft Tall Bike

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Someone in Los Angeles proved that logic should not get in the way of terrible ideas. They built a 14.5ft tall bike and pedaled it through CicLAvia, a time when streets are closed to cars and opened to cyclists and pedestrians. The one thing I like about this video is that doesn’t pretend to raise awareness or do anything important. It’s just idiotic, and kind of mesmerizing in its perspective. So odd looking down on SUVs, other tall bikes, and the crowd. I wonder who pedaled it back home.
