The photographer behind the impressive “David and Goliath” undersea photo answered some questions over at Mission Blue on the project. He was diving in was Cabo Pulmo National Park, a large marine reserve in the Sea of Cortez, one of the best places in the world to see whales, dolphins, and fish in large aggregations.

Did You Know There’s an Underwater Research Station in the Florida Keys?

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

It’s run by NASA and NOAA and called Aquarius Reef Base (it was the 80s when they named it), and it’s 60 feet down in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Scientists love it for the opportunities for research and say they can get done in 9 days what would normally take 9 months…blah, blah, blah. Why it’s so cool is the obvious reason: NASA has a James Bond-style base in the Florida Keys. And 60 feet’s not that deep, I wonder what they’d do if I stopped by and knocked on the door? I’m sure some of their henchmen would grab me. But there’s worse news; this undersea base that I just found out about is in danger of closing very soon due to some budget cuts. If that happens, it might be cheap for some enterprising villain to snatch up…maybe I’ll get a Kickstarter page going.
