KC Deane’s POV: Deep Snow and Buried Under the Snow

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Backcountry.com Athlete KC Deane put out this POV of his 2013 season that takes him from Alaska to Japan, and on one memorable run, beneath an avalanche (it’s right at the beginning). All things considered, it looks like a pretty good year.

Eric Pollard POV Skiing: From Nimbus Independent

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Mt. Hood native Eric Pollard (no relation to Robert Pollard) filed this mash-up of POV footage you’ll find inspiring as we slowly make our way into spring. Plenty of snow at Mt Hood, huh? The footage from Nimbus Independent mixes it up: natural features, powder, big lines, and the park. Nice local flavor featured at the end of the film, too.

Ski Jackson Hole: Dub Tales

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Andrew Whiteford takes us on a POV tour of Jackson Hole that hits all the highpoints: couloirs, spines, wide-open pow fields, big cliffs, and high-fives. On his Vimeo channel he includes notable flubs: “0:18 my jacket pocket is wide open. Nothing lost, thankfully.” And, “1:02 obvious backslap. -200 G.N.A.R points.”

Short Backcountry Ski Film: Dreaming

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Another fantastic, soulful skiing film, Dreaming is about the risk and reward of backcountry skiing. Beautifully shot and edited and well scored, it embodies the ethos of being in the wild quite well. Also, it includes some great skiing. The film is by DRFTWD and features the skiing of Ryan Sullivan and Stan Rey.

Big Air Gone Wrong

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Norwegian Sebastian Olsen committed to going big. This was reportedly his first attempt at hitting a massive, big-air-style kicker, and it did not go well. The good news is that he survived with only a broken leg. His season is over, and that jump is going to look even more intimidating next year.

Cliff Stomping in Jackson Hole

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Tim Swartz straps on a helmet cam to take us for a ride over some monster cliffs in Jackson Hole. He says, “It hasn’t been the deepest snow year in Jackson but it’s hard not to have fun here. There is always powder out there somewhere.” And it’s no shock that some of the best snow is on the other side of rather monstrous drops that would prove a natural barrier to mortal skiers.

92 Days of Skiing Valdez in Under 2 Minutes

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

Teton Gravity Research condenses 92 days of skiing Valdez into a video that runs under two minutes. There’s lots of amazing pow, a painful crash or two, some nights at the bars, and hooliganery on snowmobiles. Looks like a nice way to pass a solid portion of the year.

Close Call in Couloir Avalanche

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

It’s tough to get a better seat to near disaster. A duo was climbing the Canale Holzer, a classic step line in the Dolomites favored by adventurous skiers. These two happened to be sitting at the top getting ready to drop in when it broke, and they caught it on film and had a nice laugh. At least now they know it’s clear to ski.

Elevate Your Soul: Beans & Rice Freeride

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

A new release form Beans & Rice has Silas Chickering-Ayers, Jake Sakson, and Paul Kimbrough chasing turns in the Tetons. The Ski Journal, a fantastic blog (and mind-blowingly awesome magazine) suggests that skinning up and dropping turns in low-angle pow is the best way to elevate one’s soul, if you believe in that sort of thing. And if not, it’s still a nice, soulful(?) video.

Ski Patrol Collision Caught on GoPro

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

It’s hard to tell who’s really at fault in this video since you can’t see the ski patroller until he blasts in from outside of the frame. You can tell the ‘troller is running on some serious adrenaline. “You want to ski here the rest of the day? You sure about that?” In either case, the ski patrol guy comes off as a bit of a dick to the very apologetic guy he hi, though he does thank this veteran for his service when he walks away. Also…the video is over at about 1:30…not worth watching after that.
