The Brazil 9000

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

Caboclo Kingdom: Brazil 9000 Update #3 from The Skeeto Lounge on Vimeo.

The Brazil 9000 is not a South American remake of the Cannonball 3000. It’s better, in a different way. A group of adventurers is making their way along 9000km of Brazil traveling from north to south. They’re doing so under human power, passing through some legendary rivers and dealing with some soul-crushing clouds of bugs on the way. Don’t lick the frogs.

Cascada: Hunting for the Perfect Falls in Mexico

Friday, March 1st, 2013

CASCADA from NRS Films on Vimeo.

A group of paddling friends and photographers head south in search of the perfect falls and shot. And at one point one of them paddles over a pretty good drop on a stand-up paddleboard. I suspect they didn’t expect it to end well, which was the same attitude they brought when they shaved those lines into their hair. Cascada’s a solid film, another one from Forge Motion Pictures.

Big Win for Adirondack Park Paddlers

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

A tradition that dates back to English common law holds that even if a river or stream passes through private property, anyone has the right to paddle it. And now a judge in New York state has upheld that principle, saying paddlers have the right to cross private land via a small stream connecting two [ more... ]

The world’s top kayakers converged on Chile to run some of the most challenging whitewater in the world for the 2012 Grand Prix. I have no idea who shot this segment, but you have to hand it to them for producing a piece of work that could stand on its own. So often these comp recap videos are boring montages of big hits and bloody faces.

Blind Kayaker Prepping for Colorado River

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012

You might know adventurer Erik Weihenmayer as “the blind guy who climbed Mount Everest,” but did you also know that he’s an ice climber, hang glider, and skydiver? And we’re not talking that skydiving where you’re strapped to someone’s chest; he goes solo, putting his faith in instruments. Now he’s prepping for what could be [ more... ]

The latest Of Souls + Water episode is out and it features lots of high-def slow-mo, self-indulgent voiceover, and dramatic music. So it’s a lot like all the other cool movies people are making these days. I didn’t pay much attention to what the voiceover was saying, but it’s still very enjoyable without it. There’s  a pretty impressive section towards the end where Ben Marr paddles in the middle of the night with a flare strapped to his boat. Very cool.

Bellyak Whitewater Body Board

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Be sure to invest in a nice helmet before paddling face-first through the rapids. The Bellyak bills itself as a boat that offers “the full body fitness of swimming” with the “feeling of flying on the water.” The 32lb paddleboard is 8’7″ long and costs a staggering $849, though it comes with a built-in hatch [ more... ]

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Enterprising adventurer Andrew Badenoch has set a goal of making a 7,000-mile journey across much of the Canadian and Alaskan arctic traveling by fat bike and pack raft. Instead of attaching some kind of fundraising-for-a-cause to his expedition, he started a Kickstater page. He sought to raise about $10k to pay for his trip and [ more... ]

Grand Canyon Now Accepting Pleas, Petitions, and Begging for River Permits

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Rafting down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon is a once in a lifetime experience, all the more so because you need a highly coveted permit to do it unless you hire a guide — and even then the slots are scarce. So if you want to paddle it unguided, you need to plan [ more... ]
