Teton Gravity Research Camp

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Teton Gravity Research is selling the chance to ski with Dash Long and Chris Benchetler this winter at Jackson Hole. The catch? You have to be a kid interested in going to ski camp. Fall Line Camp offers a three-day camps that cost $555 if you already own a season pass and $555 if you don’t. Is this what kids do instead of Space Camp these days? If so, it seems they’re much cooler.

Snow King in Jackson, Wyoming Looking for New Owner

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

It should be noted that legendary bar Shady Lady is included in the purchase of the Snow King resort in Jackson Hole. And, of course, you’re guaranteed a front row seat to the annual uphill snowmobile race and everyone will let you cut the line to get more beer if you own the place. The owner and current Snow King himself, Maul Lopez, is hoping to pass the entire operation off to someone, and he would like to do so in the next month or so.

One humble request. If you do buy the resort and become the next Snow King, please knight me.

Widow of Skier Killed at Jackson Hole Seeks to Sue Resort

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

The widow of a man who died in an in-bounds avalanche at Jackson Hole is seeking a trial. Her husband had signed a release at Jackson Hole weeks before when he bought a season pass, and Wyoming has a recreational law that releases ski resorts and other recreation providers from liability. The woman is seeking a jury trial on the grounds that this accident is not covered by the release or Wyoming’s recreational law because the resorts decision to open the ski run was so wantonly reckless.

Among other claims, she says that resort management was putting pressure on the ski patrol to open certain sections of the mountain that had been closed for a couple days prior. This is one of the choice quotes from the discovery phase of the trial:

When asked if he ever felt pressure from his boss (because of the costs and loss of revenue from the runs being closed) to go ahead and open the mountain, Jake Elkins admitted that he did feel this pressure from Jerry Blann,” the brief says. “In fact, the afternoon before Nodine was killed, the president of JHMR, Jerry Blann, asked Mr. Elkins, the head of ski patrol: ‘Can we get that f—— lift open this afternoon?’ Not surprisingly, Mr. Elkins made the decision to open the lift in question the following morning, and David Nodine was killed.”

Going to Tiny Jackson

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Ride up the tiny tram and shred tiny lines. Last one down has to buy the first round of tiny beers. You can actually let this thing load up and watch it in HD for extra-fun tininess. It all looks so easy from way up here.

Thanks Kyle

The Tetons Latest Pile of Snow

Friday, March 25th, 2011

I suspect we’ll see more of this kind of thing now that the Tetons have come out of another massive storm. It’s a good time to be in the west. Check out some other highlights from the latest storm cycle on Teton Gravity, and if that’s not enough, Early Ups has more for you. Man…the Tetons must be getting crowded with filmmakers.

First Sit-Skier to Hit Corbet’s Couloir

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Sit-skier Chris Devlin-Young wrote a firsthand account over at Teton AT of his dropping into Jackson Hole’s famous Corbet’s Couloir run a few days ago. Ski Patrol let him and a few friends setup early at the top of Corbet’s on the day after a storm dropped 14 inches of snow. He’s the first sit-skier to make an unaided descent of Corbet’s. It sounds like the hardest part was getting through the deep snow at the top. Well, that and the 30-foot drop.

Jackson Hole Drops Charges on 78-year-old Uphill Skier

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Jackson Hole Resort will not press charges on a 78-year-old man who was arrested at the hill recently. His crime?

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort officials said Ronald Fleck was arrested Feb. 5 after ski patrol members spent 3 ½ hours attempting to convince the man to turn around while he was trying to ski uphill to watch his granddaughter’s ski race, the Jackson Hole Daily reported Monday.

I absolutely love how Ronald Fleck would not just turn around and ski back down the hill, and he forced ski patrol to argue with him for three-and-a-half hours. And then when he still wouldn’t turn around, the police had to be called in to drag this senior off the slopes. Way to stick with it, Ronald. Sure, Jackson isn’t pressing charges, but that’s the least they could do…actually, on second thought, the least they could have done was to just let him ski up and see his granddaughter’s ski race.

Jail Time for Hiker Who Sprayed Bear in Trap

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

A budding serial killer in Jackson Hole is going to jail for two days after unloading a can of bear spray on a bear caught inside a live trap. Tyler Steele sprayed the 177-pound bear caught in a culvert trap, and after he was caught pled guilty. His punishment includes about $1000 in fines and the two days in jail. I don’t know if they’ve told him yet that the bear will also be in his jail cell those two days.

Earlyups Taking Skiing Seriously

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

The crew at Earlyups pulled together this hit list from what mostly looks like Jackson Hole. It seems a good crew: lots of daffys, some great crashes, and a PBR or two. Check out their website, Earlyups.com. They mostly pull together Freeskiing vids from the web, but they also produce some pretty funny stuff.
