A teenager attempting to vault over railings separating steam vents from the walking path at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park managed to land in a 25ft fissure in the earth spouting steam. His parents contacted the park’s search and rescue and they were able to rappel down and yank him out without too much trouble. To [ more... ]

Kayaking (Near) Molten Lava

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

These shots hit the inbox (rthompson@backcountry.com) with the following fantastic note: With apologies to Jack Handy – If you drop your kayak paddle into molten lava forget about it man because it’s gone. A few kayakers more interested in thrills than self-preservation braved 190F water to paddle in and get these shots. The photo work [ more... ]

A fierce rainstorm and rapidly rising stream trapped 54 hikers overnight in Hanakapiai Valley on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii. Scuba Diver Sucked into Vortex

Friday, February 15th, 2013

This video from a Scuba diver off the coast of Maui looks like the trailer to a horror movie. Apparently the guy shooting is parked just off a deep ridge and avoids the undertow, but his subject is pulled into the vortex. Good news in the YouTube description: “John Hoover, author, takes a ride on the wild side at Nakalele point on Maui. No Hoovers were harmed in the making of this video.” Apparently these undertows can hit over 30mph.

Divers Encounter Pod of Humpback Whales

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

A duo diving off of Maui managed a very rare, chance undersea encounter with a rather large pod of humpback whales. They were diving with rebreathers running helium, so there were minimal bubbles…not that I have any idea of bubbles usually scare away whales. What I do know is that the helium ensures us some funny, muffled, high-pitched cries of, “huly shet” over and over.

Hawaii High Schools Get Official Surfing Teams

Friday, October 7th, 2011

On game days, surfers will have to wear their rash guards to class. I wonder if the school will issue 20-year-old surfboards like my high school did with warm-ups across every sport. In spring of 2013, Hawaii high schools will offer surfing alongside traditional and boring ball-based sports. I suppose they’ll compete among the islands [ more... ]

What? Good Budget News from the Feds?

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

The federal government has written Hawaii a $400k check to improve outdoor recreation in the islands. You’re thinking what I’m thinking, right? Just use all that cash to buy everyone on the island a Razor scooter. Nope, instead the Hawaii DNR will use the cash to pay for shoreline park improvements on Oahu and some [ more... ]

A Hawaiian man completed what is believed to be the first ever crossing from the Big Island to Kauai on a stand-up paddleboard. It took five days alone at sea on his surfboard to cross the 300 miles of open ocean. He survived on dried foods and freshwater strapped to his board and slept on [ more... ]

Camping in Hawaii Was Fun and all but The Weather Sucked

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

You’re essentially forced to believe that something in the universe has it out for you if this kind of weather pattern interrupts your Hawaiian vacation. This volcano/tornado photos is part of the Extreme Exposures exhibit currently running at the Annenberg Space for Photography in LA. While I think we can all agree that the word [ more... ]
