Our man Greg Hill hit his goal of 2 million feet of vert for 2010. (As of yesterday afternoon. He did another 1500 ft. lap after our photographer Tommy Chandler snapped this pic, and he’s planning a few more today.) Next year? 2 billion vertical feet. Better get started now.

Congrats Greg! And Happy New Year everyone.

Greg Hill. Done!

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

He did it! Today, with only one day to spare, Greg Hill completed his mission to climb and ski 2 million vertical feet in one calendar year. He hit his mark at Revelstoke amidst his friends and family and a posse of supporters who came out to cheer him on. All of us at Backcountry.com send him huge congratulations and a big standing O for his sacrifice, his dedication, his sheer athletic prowess and his ability to rise — all 2 million feet — to the challenge.

Greg Hill: 1.9+ million down, 9 days left

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

It’s down to the wire. Greg Hill has just nine days left to complete his goal of climbing 2 million vertical feet while ski touring this calendar year. That means he has to log just about 10k every day for the rest of the year. No problem for a fit and driven maniac like Greg, right? But after a really long year of really long days, he’s feeling a bit worn around the edges. And there’s always the weather to deal with…

Greg’s good friend Francois Desrosiers made this short film for Greg’s 35th birthday last weekend. It’s nine minutes long, and it’s worth the watch. It’s an insider’s look on Greg’s mission, including interviews of his best friends, his wife and kids, and his mom and dad.

There’s still time to enter a guess on the date and time Greg will hit 2mil in the contest on Backcountry.com. Enter for a chance to win a dream setup from all of Greg’s sponsors.

Good luck, Greg! We’re cheering for you.

Greg Hill is at 80% of goal

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Backcountry.com Athlete Greg Hill has only 46 days left to log 310,545 more vertical ski-touring feet up to check “2 million vertical feet in 2010″ off his to-do list. That’s about 6,750 vert feet a day. Though he’ll be the first to say that he’s a lucky man for the opportunity to do something as crazy as this, he’s still facing a pretty challenging Q4 after an already long year of daily grind. Right now, he’s a bit ahead of par, which is good because, obviously, you never know when knock-down winds will try to thwart your progress.  We all have days when we don’t want to get up and go to work, and I’m sure he does too, but at least the good majority of us don’t have to worry about having part of our face split open by a massive, falling, axe-shaped ice chunk. As far as the view from his office, though? It just doesn’t get any better.
