Study Finds Bearded Men Are More Attractive

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Laziness in grooming just got some good news: a study at the University of New South Wales has concluded that men and women find bearded faces more attractive. Researchers also found that men with facial hair were rated as healthier, more masculine, and more likely to be good parents. The study surveyed only 300 women [ more... ]

Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

Bill Dance, host of the appropriately named Bill Dance Outdoors show has a lot of wisdom for anglers. He’s been imparting it since 1968, and in that time he’s had a few fantastic bloopers. With all our helmet cams and constant filming, just imagine how great our blooper reels will look 40 years from now.

Terrible Ideas in Motion: A 14.5ft Tall Bike

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Someone in Los Angeles proved that logic should not get in the way of terrible ideas. They built a 14.5ft tall bike and pedaled it through CicLAvia, a time when streets are closed to cars and opened to cyclists and pedestrians. The one thing I like about this video is that doesn’t pretend to raise awareness or do anything important. It’s just idiotic, and kind of mesmerizing in its perspective. So odd looking down on SUVs, other tall bikes, and the crowd. I wonder who pedaled it back home.

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

An employee of China Airlines was strolling the beach in Taiwan when she kicked up an old Canon digital camera. The plastic housing was intact, and the China Air employee was able to extract the memory card and place the camera originally in Hawaii. The original owner stepped forward to claim her camera after a [ more... ]

Bill Burr Offers Reasonable Assessment of Lance Armstrong and Oprah

Friday, February 15th, 2013

Enjoy the most honest, and I would argue, the best take on the whole Lance-Armstrong-Oprah debacle. Bill Burr is right. Everyone made money, everyone cheated, lots of money was raised to fight cancer, and as far as Armstrong: “The guy was a sociopath on a bicycle, alright? As far as I’m concerned, we got off easy. If that guy was working for a corporation he probably would have been pouring stuff in the water supply, doing god knows what, just keep him on the bike.”

First Attempt at a Ski Jump

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013

You have to respect this 11-year-old kid that hits his first jump in the park at Kirkwood with just the right amount of swagger. His proud father informs us that he walked away just fine, and hopefully this doesn’t discourage him from riding the park. And think of it this way, if his skis and stayed on through the flip, it would have been a pretty amazing first jump.

Moose Chases Skier in Vermont

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

It turns out you can run pretty fast in ski boots if you have to. Vermont ski resorts have been taking lumps in the news lately. First in a New York Times piece that compared Maine resorts favorably to Vermont’s crowded spots, and again online when someone uploaded a video of a moose chasing a guy off a ski hill. That said, I’d choose an aggressive moose over crowded resorts any day. The person being chased may look like a child, but the video uploader assures us the guy is over 6 feet tall and that the moose is gigantic.

Portlandia: Get the Gear

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Portlandia nails it again. The bike messenger send up was perfect. Now they’ve taken on gear binging hikers. Though instead of buying a GPS they should have been shopping for a personal locator beacon, yuppie 911.

Surprise! The Video of the Baby-Snatching Eagle is Fake

Thursday, December 20th, 2012

I’m here to report something you all knew: the video of the baby-snatching eagle is fake. If you posted something on any social media about killing all eagles, or if you bought some anti-eagle spray, now is the time to try to fix those mistakes. NPR reports that three students of digital design at Montreal’s Centre NAD say they made the movie. If you’re a skeptic, you might be thinking, “Well, maybe the school’s press release is a fake.” No, it seems their students have a history of pulling off these fake animal videos.

Triathletes Falling Off Their Bikes

Monday, December 17th, 2012

After swimming two miles in the Savageman Triathlon you go for a bike ride with 6,718 feet of elevation change over 55.7 miles. The Westernport Wall, where this video was shot, has a 31% grade. People who actually make it to up to the top on their bikes have their names inscribed on a brick that is then laid in the road. There’s a measure of indescribable joy in watching people in aero helmets fall off their bikes while moving very slowly.
