The River Why Trailer

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

The River Why will premier, of course, in Portland. This is the trailer for a movie based on a book that several fishing friends of mine have really enjoyed. I liked the book as well, especially the first half. I really have only vague memories from the rest of the book, but based on the trailer for the film I can see why. Also of note, on The River Why website the man playing the reporter is credited as appearing in Hollow Man, which is the only movie I’ve ever walked out on.

Where Fishing and Fashion Meet

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

One more reason to hate hipsters: they’re buying all the feathers fly fishermen use to tie flies. One poor guy in Maine sold out months ago, but he still has to field phone calls from the fashion-obsessed every day asking if he has any in stock. Can you imagine how pathetic it must feel to look at a list of fly shops across the U.S. and know that you’re going to call all of them looking for a fashion accessory? From now on when people say “rock bottom,” that’s what I’m going to imagine. If there’s good news here it’s that there’s a lot of money to be made on eBay selling old garbage out of your tackle box.

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Last year Utah politicians sided with wealthy property owners who were sick of seeing riffraff fishing the streams that abutted their property. They made legally accessing many of the streams extremely difficult if not impossible in a shady, closed-door session. Now, the Utah Stream Access Coalition is trying to get their act together to file a lawsuit challenging the access law as unconstitutional. Good luck. Until the law is righted, there’s always civil disobedience.
