Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

After you win first place in the python-whacking contest in Florida, you might be tempted to spend some of that $1500 on a famous Everglades Pizza featuring frog legs, gator meat, and ground python. Know that the Everglades’ superintendent highly recommends against doing so. “For some reason, the pythons that are coming out of here, [ more... ]

The U of Miami managed to run their research catamaran aground back in 2007 and just recently have agreed to pay $482,000 in damages (actually their insurance company will pick up most of the tab). The newspaper doesn’t give an account of the crash but it’s safe to assume that the school’s legendary party reputation [ more... ]

An Everglades airboat captain made a series of bad decisions. The first was feeding an alligator a fish by hanging it over the side of the boat. The second was patting the water after the nine-foot alligator took the fish to try to rile the alligator to return. The water-patting incident ended with him one-handed-dialing [ more... ]

Monday, November 1st, 2010

A Florida man stole a Fish & Wildlife Commission boat and took it on an early morning joyride until the Coast Guard caught up with him. It reminds me of the time some students stole the president of our university’s golf cart, except the in this case the guy impersonated a cop to take the [ more... ]

Wildlife Park Wildness in South Florida

Friday, October 15th, 2010

I visited a friend in Florida and had to rent a car for a few days. He suggested I rent a motorcycle instead. I told him I didn’t have a license and he said, “Dude, it’s Florida. I’m sure you don’t need a special license.” Turns out he was right. Florida is a lawless place [ more... ]

Everglades Added to UNESCO’s List of Endangered Sites

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Galapagos is taken off the UNESCO endangered list and the Everglades are added. Maybe Ecuador could spare a few of their ecologist to offer some advice on how to avoid completely destroying Florida. I’m just going to throw this out there – they might say, “Stop building condos,” or just “Stop building Flori-Bama theme parks [ more... ]
