Colorado Ski Resorts Enjoy Unique Immunity from Lawsuits

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Colorado ski operators have escaped liability for such incidents as an inbounds avalanche, a ski instructor running into a 9-year-old, and a decaying bridge injuring a skier, all because of a 34-year-old law that was originally designed to protect family-run ski resorts from ruin, even as the bulk of the state’s ski areas are now [ more... ]

15 Skiers Caught in A-Basin Avalanche Escape

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

While skiing on a ski-patroller-led outing at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area 15 skiers managed to escape an avalanche relatively unscathed. The slide was outside of the boundary of the resort, “but the resort said that it had undergone “extensive” avalanche mitigation and explosive work in recent days.” Only one skier in the group had to [ more... ]

Crested Butte Backcountry Skiers Find Lost Cattle

Friday, January 25th, 2013

A group of backcountry skiers in Gunnison County skinned a burly ridge that has a pitch of at least 40 degrees to find several cattle hanging out at the top. Rather surprised they took a couple photos and asked if anyone had lost their cattle atop Heart Attack Ridge. By the time they reached the [ more... ]

Colorado Ski Resorts Have No Plans to Embrace Marijuana Legalization

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

But what did you expect? Ski resorts are parts of massive corporations, and they already face monumental liability issues. Plus the gray area that this “legalization” lives in isn’t exactly something you can build a tourist campaign around. That said, I’m sure life will go on in Colorado as it has for ages, with lots [ more... ]

After dropping a patient at a hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado the pilot of a flight-for-life helicopter decided to make a recreational detour on the way home to Arizona. Elk hunters witnessed him diving into a canyon several times, harassing a herd of elk that would run for cover whenever he’d zoom in. The hunters [ more... ]

Barry Bonds Begins Cycling

Monday, July 30th, 2012

The man with the most homeruns in the history of MLB has dropped a ton of weight pedaling his road bike around the Rockies this summer. Sounds like a crossover hit. We get a famous ballplayer into cycling and his few remaining fans give the sport a second look. The best part is that Bonds [ more... ]

Colorado Fourteeners Initiative at Work

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative works to build sustainable summit trails and take down user-created unsustainable ones. We support the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, which is the least we can do since we’re not volunteering to haul trail maintenance gear up to the top of 14,000ft peaks. I hope they don’t have a hard time carrying down all my empty oxygen bottles. It feels good to give back.

Drought May Drive Bears Downtown Aspen

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

I would find tremendous joy in seeing the city of Aspen overrun with hungry bears this summer. An unseasonably warm spring has caused the region’s bears to come out of their hibernation early, and a drought has made food scarce in the backcountry. The city has already setup traps to try to stop two nuisance [ more... ]
