Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

In the vast churn of the new and the now, that’s an eternity. And yet Evan Orensten’s Red Wings just went back to Red Wing, Minnesota, to their birthplace, for a little spa treatment. For $95, including shipping, Orensten had them resoled, buffed, relaced, and given the TLC he never bothered to show them through [ more... ]

Yes, they’ve heard that turns a lot of people off, wondering why it isn’t made in England, where the high-end cycling brand is based, and they go right at that question in this blog post about why that’s untenable, and why what you might end up with would be far inferior to what you get [ more... ]

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

So…what’s Arc’teryx been up to lately? This photo shoot and accompanying article for Montecristo Magazine (it’s NOT about sandwiches) offers some insight into their new fashion-forward line, Veilance. Basically they realized that a lot of people buying their products were using them as fashion accessories instead of backcountry travel accessories, so they thought they’d try [ more... ]

Coldsplinters Hiking Shorts

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Friend of the Goat, Coldsplinters has designed his own hiking shorts. They look like something you’d find at a vintage thrift store or maybe American Apparel, so we can assume they’ll sell by the millions and be the beginnings of his North-Face-style mega clothing empire. They’re $79, so at the same price point as most [ more... ]

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I recommend not using the ‘zoom in’ option if you’re shopping for the new Stoic Merino Boxer Brief on Backcountry.com. Reviewers have already chimed in: “Hi. I’m an 11 year old girl and have never seen boys in underwear before, but I don’t think I need to register for the puberty class this year. The [ more... ]

On the Greenwashing of Bamboo Clothing

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Bamboo clothing was the rage a couple years ago. You couldn’t walk into an outdoors store without getting flogged with leafy shoots of the plant while someone else forced a bamboo-and-cocoa shirt over your head. Big box stores noticed, and they found an innovative way to be part of the green bamboo trend without changing [ more... ]

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

I remember thinking these Injinji socks with the toe-gloves would be really popular right after they came out. I’d met a girl wearing them and she was freaking out about how awesome the socks were. But then I saw her a couple months later and she was freaking out about how awesome a new Harry [ more... ]
