Trailer: Out of Sight, Bouldering Fontainebleau

Friday, April 19th, 2013

Out of Sight is a film series that documents some of the world’s top climbers coming to the Fontainebleau proving grounds. Produced and directed by Neil Hart, it takes you on a walk deep into the beautiful places in this wild, vast region of France. While climbing films are all inherently about as exciting as ice fishing films, the film does a fantastic job telegraphing the notion of peace and tranquility of bouldering.

Ashima: Return of the Warrior Ninja Princess

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

Ten-year-old Ashima Shiraishi returns to Hueco Tanks to send Crown of Aragorn (V13) and Barefoot on Sacred Ground (V12). I can’t think of another real sport besides climbing where a 10-year-old girl can crush loads of adult men in their prime, though perhaps Ashima is a pioneer and we’ll soon see girls her age returning punts in the NFL and hitting 90mph fastballs. Perhaps she’s so good because she doesn’t realize how hard this is supposed to be? Her coach should take her golfing and tell her to hit the ball into the cup from the tee just to see if she holes in one.

Nineteen days on eight days of food, and the climb ended 100 meters from the summit. Three years later they were ready to return to Meru. This is the trailer for their upcoming film, and based on their work in the past on short videos, you know this is going to be amazing.

Cheyne Lempe put together this amazing video that wouldn’t be a good idea for seizure-prone people to watch; it’s about the first ascent of a massive climb in Patagonia. They went 6561 feet up the northwest ridge of Aguja Mermoz into the north pillar of Cerro Fitz Roy, one of the longest routes on El Chalten. Perhaps most impressive, they found time to shoot a lot of great film on the way.

Reel Rock Excerpt: Chris Sharma Vs Adam Ondra

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Fall is here and the Reel Rock tour is just around the corner. This just-released clip from the movie La Dura Dura has Chris Sharma and Adam Ondra battling their way up what could be one of the most difficult routes ever. Like (almost) all climbing films, it has to find a way to create drama around the story of a very difficult climb, when only a handful of people in the world can tell just how difficult it is to complete such a task. I like to imagine what it’d be like for insanely good ice fishermen to tell the story of how good they are at what they do…I suspect that would have limited appeal as well.

Shooter John Dickey escaped the summer heat with Backcountry.com Athlete Cedar Wright to send some routes in Wyoming’s Ten Sleep Canyon and get some film. Ten Sleep sounds like a great place to climb. But based on the stuff they were on, I’m not sure why it’s called Ten Sleep. Maybe Ten Phallus, but not Ten Sleep.

Ueli Steck Speed Solos Shishapangma

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Watching this video actually makes my palms sweat, though to be fair, I sweat kind of a lot. Apparently Ueli Steck does not need to worry much about sweat or overheating as he had all his blood replaced with ice water. Backcountry.com Athlete Don Bowie was on hand for 10.5-hour (20 hours up-and-down) charge on [ more... ]

Chad Expedition Teaser, by Renan Ozturk

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Backcountry.com Athlete Renan Ozturk put together this video teaser from his expedition to Chad with Alex Honnold and Mark Synnott, among others. The video will hopefully be ready for the Telluride Mountain Film later this spring. The climbing looks insane, as do the trials to get to these spires that have never been touched by climbers.
