Wingsuit Cave Flight

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

BASE jumper and wingsuit flyer Alexander Polli managed to survive flying through a very narrow cave in Spain. He jumped from a helicopter and shot through at 155mph. Talk about commitment, it’s tough to pull the plug on this one if you change your mind; miss by a few feet, and you’re painting the mountainside with your insides.

Wingsuit Flyers Buzz Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia

Monday, November 5th, 2012

Two guys from the Red Bull crew somehow convinced Malaysia’s government to let them fly past the iconic Petronas Twin Towers in their wingsuits. Money conquers all, I suppose. I wonder how many people working in their offices in the towers saw the guys fly past and thought they were witnessing a couple jumpers.

New Goggles for Wingsuit Pilots Offer Direct-to-Eye-Display

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Wingsuit pilot extraordinaire Jeb Corliss is testing a new goggle made by Recon Instruments that shows speed, hang time, and angle of flight. It’s intended for BASE jumpers and people jumping off cliffs while wearing wingsuits. I suppose the LCD might get in your way of actually seeing the ground, but if that happens and [ more... ]

British Weatherman BASE Jumps to Raise Awareness for Climate Change

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

In this video veteran British weatherman Michael Fish BASE jumps to raise awareness for climate change. Two points about this video: 1. It makes no sense, and 2. It is a terrible idea. He says, “If anything is going to raise awareness for climate change, it’s going to be doing damn silly things like this.” …or you could just talk about it while you’re during the weather, when you can reach more people…people interested in the weather.

BASE Jumper Survives 393-Foot Fall

Monday, July 9th, 2012

A Russian BASE jumper took the plunge from a 120-meter high electrical pylon and ran into some parachute troubles on the way down. I wonder if his friend jumped down after him or decided to take the ladder. The BASE jumper was going around 106 miles per hour when he hit the ground, and soft snow saved the day. The man survived but broke his legs, pelvis, and some vertebrae. Three months after the Wile E. Coyote landing he was up and walking again.

New Base Jump World Record

Friday, June 8th, 2012

It took Valery Rozov a month in the Indian Himalaya to prepare for this base jump with the last six days spent climbing and the last 90 seconds spend descending. His climbing partners took three more days to get back down. I’m sure they were kicking themselves for not packing wingsuits.

The World BASE Race

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

No time for a safety check—gotta jump! In the World BASE Race competitors go head-to-head in wingsuits to race to the ground. First one down (and alive) wins. I triple-checked to make sure this wasn’t an old April Fool’s joke that I stumbled across late in my reader. And if it is real (I’m holding [ more... ]

The crew from moab b.a.s.e. adventures linked up a couple BASE jumps. You have to really, really careful not to knock your buddy off that second tower. And also hope the wind doesn’t kick up and get hold of your chute and drag you off to top. A wild ride and a nice video.

So, Just How Dangerous is BASE Jumping

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Outside Magazine takes a look at BASE jumping fatalities and just how deadly the sport really is. Since 1981 there have been 180 deaths, and they breakdown how those have happened. The surprising leader is no-pulls, coming in at 38%. Another 30% hit something on the way down, and the remainder get tangled up or [ more... ]
