Bald Eagles in Alaska Attacking Postal Customers

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Can’t it attack the employees? The service desk at post offices is the only job you can have where people expect you to be rude. A pair of bald eagles nesting near a post office in Dutch Harbor, Alaska have been dive bombing customers as they make a dash for the door. The eagles have hatchlings for the second year, and they’re defending their territory. Two people were attacked last week, and one of those drew blood. Authorities have posted signs warning about the attacks, but they have no plans to move the nests or disrupt the birds in any way. Man, that must be the most exciting post office in the world to work in.

The Trans-Alaska March

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Michael Ferrara is marching 900 miles across Alaska and blogging about his adventure for Outside. I don’t often follow these hiking trips, but Michael’s opening line of this blog post caught my attention:

Throughout this trip one of the big drawbacks has been the fact that I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.

You have to respect a guy who decides to charge 900 miles across a state with no idea what he’s doing, plus, the point of his hike is to raise awareness for first responder diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder so it’s okay to get behind him. This most recent post includes an injury that comes from falling through a laundry room floor. Enjoy.

Avalanche Airbag Saves Skier in Alaska

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Jeff Wyshynski was heli skiing in Alaska when a slide caught  up with him. He was wearing a Backcountry Access Float 30 backpack, and he pulled the airbag’s ripcord and it inflated, likely contributing to keeping him on top of the slide. The video’s 11 minutes long, but all of the action happens right in the beginning.

Michael Ferrara is skiing across Alaska, the long way. He’ll cover 900 miles from the ‘Pacific’ Ocean to the Arctic Ocean, and on the way he’ll post on the Outside blog. I’m not sure what kind of access he’ll have to computers while making his way north, but maybe he can drop us some updates over a sat phone. Ferrara is a first responder with decades of experience under his belt, and he’s making his trek to raise awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder that many first responders deal with during their careers.

Don’t Pet the Mooses, or is it Meese?

Friday, March 11th, 2011

A woman in Alaska learned the hard way that Anchorage is not a massive petting zoo. She reached out to pet a moose as it wandered past. The moose kicked her several times in the shoulders and chest, but she didn’t require a trip to the hospital. I imagine it was one of those times were you’re hurt but you’re more embarrassed, so you just brush off that you fell down the hill on the Frisbee golf course (or in this case got kicked by a moose) and then go home and hope you’re not bleeding internally. The moose was later spotted hanging around Town Square most of the day. Yeah, that’s right. A moose wandered into the biggest business district of the largest town in the largest state in the US and people hardly noticed. It’s a bit rural up there.
