Patagonia isn’t slowly backing away from paddlesports—they dropped their gun and are making a mad dash for the bank’s exit. The outdoor retailer is closing down all their paddling gear immediately. They’ve already sent closeout lists of the gear piled in their warehouses, so we can look forward to seeing women’s small Lotus Designs PFDs sit on SteepandCheap overnight. Patagonia makes some fantastic gear, and you can’t argue with their responsible growth practices or the great treatment of their employees—but they’re certainly not infallible. I said they’d regret the decision to open all those stores in markets where they already had strong retailers years ago—and so far I’ve been wrong—but what I should have said was, “Their paddlesports line will certainly collapse.†Also, I think they made a mistake robbing a lot of their retailers of business by building their own stores.

The darkside of online gear deals just got a dose of the Force. You still can’t try on the shirts before SteepandCheap sends them to you, but you can pay a reasonable rate for shipping (today only). SteepandCheap is running a $2 shipping day on everything sold from now until midnight. It’ll likely mostly be T-shirts and tube socks, but I’m sure they’ll sneak in some dumbbells and medicine balls.

SteepandCheap couldn’t scrape together enough hiking gear for a Hiking Themed day, so they did the next laziest thing. Today’s a Camp/Hike/Backpack Day on the cheap gear site—just be glad they’re not a little lazier otherwise today would be a Camp/Hike/Backpack/Gardening Day. You’ve already wasted 7 hours sleeping today, head over to SteepandCheap to check on which deals you’ve missed. Also, sign up for the Daily Dose and I’ll send you an e-mail every day.

Tomorrow is a skier-only day on SteepandCheap where everything for sale on site is ski-related. Look for things like helmets that hold beer cans, but don’t expect to see any Burton 420 Kits. So beginning at midnight tonight you’ll get the chance to completely outfit yourself with new ski gear at 50% off. It might not all match, but that’s cool now.

The SteepandCheap Gear Storm is going faster than a Utah police officer chasing traffic violators with a taser. The Forum is packed with people who are buying and discussing gear instead of working, and so far we’re 29 items into the 100 item Gear Storm day. Coming up soon in the queue we have some Columbia Cerise Women’s Wind Jackets for $10 and Siver Cartel Adapter Down Men’s Jackets for $100. After that we’ll have some HighGear TerraTech Altimeter Watches and Smith Lovejoy L.E. Sunglasses.
