Video: Supercell in Texas

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

Photographer Mike Olbinski posted up near Booker, Texas to shoot this film of a rotating supercell. It’s actually a timelapse, the first three clips were at 1-second intervals, then the rest done in 5-second exposures. He chased the storm through hail and torrential rain bursts to the side he wanted to post up on and get the film. Supercells aren’t tornados, but storms that rotate around an updraft. He described it: “I’m from Arizona. We don’t get structure like this. Clouds that rotate and look like alien spacecraft hanging over the Earth.”

Black Bear Climbs Tree to Look at Hunter

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

There’s something to be said for this hunter’s incredible self restraint. Not only did he not shoot the bear in self-defense, but he also didn’t scream at the top of his lungs and evacuate his bowels when the thing climbed up his tree to see what he was doing. All we get is a very restrained “holy $h!t.” Whatever weird bear-in-heat spray he dumped all over himself works very well.

The Lost Trailer from Legs of Steel

Monday, June 17th, 2013

The Euros from film company Legs of Steel (it sounds cooler in European) released the official trailer for their upcoming film The Lost, which comes out in September. They describe the film as “a no rules ski movie produced by the crew, for the crew” so I guess it’ll be full of inside jokes and law breaking, though based on the trailer it looks more like it’s about skiing on really steep mountains.

DeepFlight Submersible: Searching for Whale Song

Monday, June 17th, 2013

A couple sub pilots strapped GoPros over their berets to drive the DeepFlight Super Falcon to search for whales. I can’t wait until this sub becomes the next rich guy toy, then goes out of style, and then I get a chance to buy one at a deep discount. The video was shot in Hawaii, where some of these humpback whales go to mate. Fortunately for our Cousteaus none of them found the Super Falcon attractive.

Bear Fight in Vancouver Suburban Driveway

Friday, June 14th, 2013

The latest sign that humans have encroached too deep into wild territory occurred in Vancouver where a woman opened the front door of her house to see two large black bears fighting in her driveway. She had the presence of mind to shoot a video, but she failed to turn her camera sideways. Police arrived and killed both animals, so the story has an unhappy ending, too.

Crash Reel From New York City Night Race

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

There was a crash corner in my middle school where kids would routinely get their books “dumped,” meaning that some kid with self-esteem issues would try to knock your books out of your hands when the hallway was most crowded. I saw some mayhem there, but nothing compares to this final race during the Red Hook Crit in New York City’s Brooklyn Navy Yards.

When the Waves Call: Surfing Wisconsin

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

I’m obliged to love this movie since it’s about surfing in my home state. And I do love it. A bunch of guys pulling on 6mm wetsuits and post-holing through thigh-deep snow to go surfing, it’s great. And they’re even Packers fans. The only thing that bothers me is the guy who says, “A lot of us don’t want to be here…” So move!

Stolen Bike Action NYC

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

I have no idea who this man is but I admire his direct action approach to the lack of bike parking space. Also, I like his office and obviously stolen American Airlines uniform. And I have to admire him for acknowledging that it was his fault his bike was stolen. Too bad it didn’t work out for him in the end. Also, don’t ride on the sidewalk.

Retro Report: Biosphere 2

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

I remember when they sealed this sucker up. It was a big topic in my elementary class, I even volunteered among my classmates to enter the Biosphere myself. In spite of all that, I still wasn’t inspired to see the movie BioDome featuring Pauly Shore and at least one bungee jumping scene…it was the early 90s after all. The New York Times takes a look back to 1991 with this report on the Biosphere 2.

Rios Libres: The History of the Dam

Tuesday, June 11th, 2013

Welcome to Episode dos of Rios Libres: Environmental Dispatches. It has the exact same intro as episode one, so go ahead and skip to 1:15 if you watched that one. Here we learn that there’s still one place in the world where you can drink directly out of streams, and we find the language used when talking about damming rivers has a lot in common with the way people talk about climate change. The best part of the video? All the explosions. Oh, and the message. Great message.
