Lance Is Responsible for Anti-Lycra Backlash? Really?

Friday, May 17th, 2013

According to the Wall Street Journal, there’s an anti-Lycra backlash sweeping through the cycling world, and it’s because nobody wants to be associated with cheaters, dopers, and those who cry on Oprah and/or wear matching kit. More likely is that this story wouldn’t have gotten attention if it didn’t have a Lance Armstrong hook to [ more... ]

If you want to go to Wrangel Island, be prepared to take an icebreaker or a helicopter. Not to mention a jet, or several, to Russia, since you’re going to wind up 90 miles north of Siberia. For the last leg you could tag along, as writer Hampton Sides did for his current story in National [ more... ]

Mountain Bike Speed Record: 135 mph

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

Frenchman Eric Barone rocketed down the slopes of a resort near Les Arcs setting the world speed record for a serial production mountain bike. I image that the parameters for “serial production” are rather forgiving seeing as how I’ve never seen a bike quite like the one pictured for sale anywhere in the world. The [ more... ]

Friday, April 19th, 2013

Smithsonian Magazine takes a look at the biggest historical cheats in adventure racing, climbing, and travel. My favorite is Donald Crowhurst, who began sending fake updates from his around-the-world sailboat race when he realized he wasn’t going to finish. He inadvertently put himself in the lead and on record-setting pace, but he was in way [ more... ]
