Is Your Long Underwear Killing the Salmon?

The UK’s version of the EPA is worried about nano threads of heavy metals in clothing, which is something we’ve seen espoused from Patagonia for years. Turns out that the heady Capilene funk smell really might be saving the world.

[The report] said there was a “major gap” in research about the risks posed by the materials, which are found in some 600 products globally.

The commission chair also said he would not recommend clothes with nanosilver.

“We are concerned about nanosilver in clothing getting into the environment because it could be potentially very damaging,” Professor Sir John Lawton said.

They call for an investigation into the threads that have been keeping our junk smelling fresh on the slopes in Marmot long underwear. Thanks for leading the charge, UK. Hopefully we can expect some of this from our government in the next few years.

Are you kidding me? I don’t mean to sound indignant, but with rampant starvation and factional clashing in Africa, human rights violations in North Korea and Burma, Christian persecution in Indonesia, execution of homosexuals in Iran, et al, I’m amazed that a government is making a “potential” environmental impact a priority!

Come on, now! This sounds like that useless organization called the U.N. who took $23 million from a fund directed to help starvation in Africa so that they could get a pretty ceiling: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/world/AP/story/776570.html, http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,454191,00.html. How many people could have been helped with that money?

Now, I’m sure that the people spearheading this research are well-intended and the situation warrants concern. But with greater things happening around the world my respect for the people delving into and diverting funds for such things is a pittance at best.

    Get real.
