Roadside Assistance for Cyclists (in Tasmania)

bike-in-tree

Tasmania, which turns out to be a real island off the coast of Australia, is offering roadside assistance to cyclists who breakdown. It’s an interesting move that will likely take about 20 years to get to America. The program is being run by an automobile club on the island, which is mind-boggling since in the U.S. automobile clubs exist only to assist their members with squashing bikers on the side of the road. That said, a roadside assistance program isn’t quite enough to get me to move to the land of Yahoo Serious and the Tasmanian Devil. Still, roadside help would be a nice offer for people thinking about making the jump to bike commuting—I mean, it’s not like we expect drivers to be able to fix their own cars when they breakdown.

Actually, check out Better World Club, an alternative to AAA that offers bike-only or bike and car roadside assistance plans (and doesn’t lobby against public transit like AAA does).
