A Field Guide to New York City Cyclists

pista-douche

Over the weekend The New York Times rolled out this field guide to NYC cyclists. They nailed it with the Pista and dock shoes, but I’m not sure they adequately covered the massive umbrella of the yuppie category with the woman on the $13k Pinarello Price. And what’s with only four categories of cyclists in the city? What about the recumbent white guys with beards and unicyclists training for the circus?

The slideshow of cyclists is actually kind of funny and an interesting look into NYC bike culture. And I’m a big supporter of getting people from all walks of life out of cars and onto bikes, which is why I find it so baffling that I desperately want half of the people featured in this slideshow to get hit by taxis.

None of the hipsters I know in New York, especially those riding in critical mass, would ever drop 600 dollars to ride fixed (that’s like a month of rent in Bushwick/Bed-Stuy). They pick up an 80’s bike for 100 or 200 at most from Long Island or Jersey and convert it to a fixie or some other bike monstrosity. The Times is clearly missing a huge subculture from their article, instead focusing on the Williamsburg/Greenpoint trust funders.
