Atwood Ti Rescue Whistles vs PLBs
You could put the $100 towards a Personal Locator Beacon, or you could throw it at one of these Ti Whistles from Atwood Knives. Let’s weigh the benefits of each: One signals satellites and contacts the Coast Guard, the other weighs a few grams and can play double-duty for your burgeoning referee career. One could get lost in the washing machine, the other could accidentally go off while you’re tossing it around like a football at camp. Sounds like a win-win—I think I’ll get both.

Looks like the TI whistles have been sold out as of September 29th.

Most of Atwood’s stuff gets sold out before it even makes it to his site.

So then what’s the point of making a blog post about it a month after they’re sold out? And why spend $100 on a whistle in the first place?

I understand the disparity between a PLB and a whistle. What I don’t understand is why someone would buy a Ti whisle versus a plastic one. The impact needed to break a solid plastic rescue whistle (normally attached to the rescuee) would leave said person without the ability to blow the now broken whistle. Having the whistle survive when the hiker doesn’t isn’t much of an added benefit.
I’m envisioning Piggy from Lord of the Flies, his plastic rescue whistle probably broke.
