Boa Branches Into Tents, but Why?
Big Agnes is relying on the same BOA technology that comes in some snowboard boots to tighten down their tent flies. It’s an odd move from a company that’s famous for saving weight by making sleeping bags that don’t have back since it’s not like tents were having all kinds of fly-tightness problems. The BOA cable-and-dial also keeps the poles held together, which could be nice if I’d ever had a problem with the shock cord I currently use. Hell, you don’t even need shock cord to hold poles together—all it does is make them easier to store and put together. This is a classic case of addressing a problem that isn’t even there so you can spin a new tech and try to sell some extra gear. Et tu, Big Agnes?

That would be because both companies are in Steamboat…a few too many beers and the next thing you know a bastard child is born.

I have not seen this, or touched and felt it, but it looks cool. it is not for tightening the poles, but for tightening the fly. the challenge is the pole is a finite length, the fly changes in length along the pole line, depending on whether it is dry or dry. the difference in a nylon fly can be 4%. and this looks like you can make that adjustment in a Tstorm, without having to go out side and get wet.
good job BA, i think the boa system has just started scratching the surface….

I for one have a lot of respect for BA because I have one of their sleeping bags that they customized for me. It’s a great product.

So if the BOA system is going to crank down on the fly, wouldn’t it only be able to leaver against hard points? Like the corners of the tent where the poles are? SO you’d still have to guy out the mid points if you were wanting the fly to be up away from the tent walls….I’m not sure how I see this as an advantage over my REI tent where there are nylon straps at the corners that tighten the fly, cords that pinch in plastic tensioners for the doors, and then I guy out the ends.
Also, depending where that very thin metal wire was going to be I’d think it would start wearing on the inside of the fly mighty quick–especially under tension.

I stay home when it rains.

But seriously: This BOA system is intents.
