Grain Surfboards 12’ Drifter

grain-surfboard-drifter

You’d go through two blocks of wax just getting this thing ready to ride. The Grain Surfboards Drifter is a 12’ wooden monster that you won’t be able to buy if you’re driving a sub-compact car or don’t have a friend who can help carry it to the beach. Grain Surfboards offers most of their boards as kits that you can shape at home, but the 12’ Drifter is available only as a custom order. The log costs about $2300.

don’t let WhiskeyTango see the Gallery of surf shots in Maine. Looks like San Diego, as in 1964. Their site ranks up there with SurfySurfy, still commercial as hell, but with a sliver of soul.

Yeah, yeah…but so effing what. A two thousand-dollar-plus surfboard made from wood in Maine?
Pretty and all but you don’t need to spend that kind of cash for a decent longboard just to catch east coast mush.
Hell, you don’t need to spend that much money on any board regardless of where you surf.

    PS to hypersailor-
    The Maine-SD analogy doesn’t work.
I don’t think 1964 San Diego saw surfers wearing wetsuits even in winter.

I respect Mr. Whiskey if only because he snagged the kewlest handle, WTF. Surfers in the day had beaver tailed piece of crap stiff suits that probably hurt more than helped keep you warm. I agree a hand me down board works great in mush, then again once you’ve ridden a Dick Brewer hand shaped stick its night and day as to enjoyment. I haven’t surfed Maine, but recall SD having clear to the bottom water visability in the ’70’s. Hey if sandals can cost $70 why can’t surfboards cost $2300! Anyone priced a mtn bike lately?

you can easily convert your fixie into a mountain bike for not as much as you’d think. just have to re-space your rear triangle, toss on a new freewheel/cassette/shifter and mount your mec with a few zaps. i’ve been riding my “shifty” for years and i’m way cool….. ps i’m guessing the paddle must clip on to the top of that surfboard?

  6. hypersailor Says:

I think its cool there is a newer generation of surf dudes. Some are creative as hell, others just surf, who cares as long as “turns is turns”. Yeah surfing is way more commercial, but it employs surfer types usually, so thats a win win. Stand up paddling is yet another path that some people will take, but the core surfboard isn’t going away soon.

p.s. that in the picture is Mike, he made the board, he owns the company. There is nothing comercial as hell about it. Used to live out yonder on the border of maine and nh. Those guys at grain pour their hearts into those beautiful boards, and you can make your own for about the cost of a new china made stick.
