Tyvek Jacket Not Even a Step Up from Garbage Bag

tyvek-jacket

I’ve heard Tyvek is amazing. Of course, that was in the context of home building and heating costs. Cyclists are noticeably different from houses. For one, they look different. For two, well, they don’t do well with Tyvek. These cheap jackets are made from the crinkly DuPont material and available as a cheap alternative to garbage bag ponchos. The sick airbrushed graphics almost make up for the lack of utility—almost.

If Tyvek helps your heating costs, your house is a serious piece of crap. The purpose of house wrap is to provide a rain plane for precipitation to drain on before it gets into the wall assembly. It is not airtight. You don’t want your wall assembly to be air tight, especially on the outside of the wall, unless you enjoy moldy houses.

Misguided outdoors people getting bad information from misguided contractors. Idiots untie!

Whoa, that was a lesson in Tyvek I wasn’t expecting. Thanks?

unfortunately there are still a lot of people out there deciding between a garbage bag for a jacket, or a tyvek jacket. this is a low cost item, and for the money these types of jackets do a great job. the dupont nonwoven material also is recycled PE material, and is waterproof and breatheable. okay, its not an arcteryx or a GORE bike jacket that sells for $200. but it is a great jacket, when compared to a garbage bag

Sure sam, glad to be useless. It’s just another service I provide . . .

I agree with billygoat. As a cheapo jacket, they’d be fine, but stay away from the contractors Rocky talks to.

Let me know when you’re ready to move on to chapter 2, duct mastic misappropriated as boot sealer.

Tyvek is a brand (by DuPont) not product. There are at least 16 different version of that material , so the Home Wrap is not the same as Soft Structure , Stucco Wrap or Asuron (medical packaging). Versions of Tyvek are commonly used for protective clothing, envelopes and even tent flys
