Soy Diets Linked to Memory Loss

bacon-vs-tofu

All those guys eating soy burgers while I scarf down that corn-fed beef wrapped in bacon (with the bun dipped into the frying grease) might be in more trouble than me—assuming my heart ticks for five more years. This study covered by the BBC indicates that heavy soy consumption, including eating tofu at least once a day, might raise the risk of memory loss. Of course, biking to work might also raise the risk of dying young, so we all choose our battles. Me? I’m just not a fan of tofu.

my buddy colin eats soy and im pretty sure he no longer has a memory, so it must be true.

    Sure…make fun. But don’t forget…er…what was I saying?

    Oh yeah…the bad logic.

    Soy is bad for memory.
Japanese folks (in Japan) eat lots of soy (they do…I live in Japan…it’s true)
    So,
    Japanese must have bad memories.

    Oops…they don’t.

I want to be a researcher. I can do stupid studies with bad controls and sound smart.

PS … if you don’t like tofu, you just haven’t eaten it correctly. It can be outstanding!

I live dangerously close to Red Mill Burgers, a Seattle staple featuring some huge and quite amazing burgers. They have one called The Conundrum featuring a soy burger with real bacon. Best of both worlds.

This is a humerous reason for me to keep eating delicious meats. But I have to remind the sheep of an age old truth about statistics “correlation does not equal causation.” Feel free to completely ignore any statistical health study unless the researcher is actually willing to give a medical reason for the relationship. This linked study does at least offer theories as to why the two might be linked, but considering they population they used was from one country they would need to run actual medical research to confirm if it was the soy or the way the tofu was processed, or some related gene, or living too close to the Equator–who knows.

Just remember, research indicates that there is a direct correlation between the sale increased sale of icecream in a given year with the murder rates of that same year. We must all protest Ben and Jerry’s for the murderers they create!

cleary the tofu eating crew involves in other activities such as…

Shit, I eat tofu and ride a bike to work, does this mean I’m going to forget to die young?
