Trek E2 Headtube Going to be a Pain in the Ass
Trek gave a look at a new step-down headtube technology that flares from 1.125in at the top to 1.5in at the bottom. So far it looks like it’s only on their $6k downhill bike, and let’s hope the technology isn’t expanded to the rest of the line. The last thing we need is a new non-standard size making life difficult for aftermarket parts. The industry makes a move like this every few years. Someone thinks they can corner a market by building a non-standard part, then it doesn’t work any better so no one buys it, and then the poor bastard early adopters are left combing used-part bins to try to fix their bike 5 years later. It’s like Schwinn-sized tires and Shimano’s integrated shifters/brakes.

Except Shimano made how much last year in profits? Increases of 44% to 19.9 billion yen. I’m guessing they can make all the integrated shifters they want and keep laughing all the way to the bank, dude.

Yeti is doing it too with their new Seven model. I think Cannondale started it with a road bike a couple of years back.
