The 20 Snowiest Ski Resorts Worldwide

snowstorm

The Gear Junkie wrote this article for Forbes Traveler detailing the top 20 resorts with the most snow in the world. The good news is that North America took four of the top five spots, and you only need to bow down to your snow overlords in Japan if you don’t ride at Mt. Baker in Washington.

1. Mt. Baker, Washington (641 inches)
2. Niseko, Japan (595 inches)
3. Alta, Utah (523 inches)
4. Alyeska, Alaska (513 inches)
5. Kirkwood, California (473 inches)

A convincing argument could be made about re-ranking the resorts according to snow quality and quantity. Utah resorts would be at the top; I doubt if we’d see Alyeska on the list.

BUT, the look on those Forbes-reading tourists’ faces when they see that those 513 inches of snow at Alyeska have magically turned into 513 inches of ice will be priceless!

  2. Zack Byrd Says:

What year are you basing this on? Alyeska should be on top with a record snowfall of 1100 inches in 1997! you should go to Alyeska its much better than MT. Baker

  3. Chris S Says:

Mt Baker is nothing special, everybody should go ride Utah instead. I hear it’s much more friendly there, you can hang out with Rocky and you don’t have to worry about needing fat skis just to ride the ridiculous amounts of snow.

[…] *Sigh. Gotta love bloggers. At the end of the day we’re just as lazy as mainstream media. There’s nothing easier than publishing a list. Just find some stats. Get an expert or two to sign off and blam, an article. Ready-made. Like Kraft Mac N’ Cheese. In this case, the guilty trail goes something likes this Forbes/Gear Junke –> The Goat –> Snow Hugger –> GoBlog. Why’d we wait so long? We wanted someone to put it in a nice table, with stats and links, and Snow Hugger was kind enough to oblige (table after the jump). Now, just to show you how useless these lists are, lets look at actual snow conditions for 2007/2008. Kirkwood (#5 on the list) is at 33% of normal. In fact, there’s basically no snow in California yet we have 3 of the Top 20. And Utah, with 5 resorts in the Top 20 also has crap snow. Colorado, with only one resort in the Top 20 has decent snow and not one resort on the East Coast made it, yet its been dumping there. Moral of the story? A truck load of information about the past, isn’t as useful as a few nuggets about the future. And that’s what we do here at GoBlog, tell you the future. You read it here first. As usual. Which of those top 5, other than Japan is outside North America? I’ve visited Utah (not for snow, though), and that place is weird, and gets my vote. I’ve got a Baker pass this year, and the powder is really stacking up. It went from 60″ base to 101″ in about 4 days. So much fun to ride.
