Marmot Urban Packs: You’re With Me Leather!

marmot-leather-backpacks

Marmot is launching a new line of leather-bound urban backpacks for next spring. The super-size one of the left is nearly big enough to fit my collection of leather-bound Dickens’ books. The Marmot Leather Line reminds me of JanSport school bags from the late 80s and early 90s that people like you made fun of people like me for carrying around all summer. The packs will be available sometime in March, no word on pricing yet.

What was the deal with those old JanSport bags anyway? Unless you had parents who were willing to shell for a new bag every year, that leather got pretty rank/disfigured. They were either rubbed to a Kelsey Grammer-forehead-like sheen, or ground into a wet, suedelike pulp. I think I speak for us all when I say that I hoped that, as a species, we’d moved beyond the need for backpacks that wear leather chaps.

I kind of hate that K2 and Marmot went ahead and bought Dana Design and now they are turning out bags that combine the worst of an Jansport and a Duluth pack. Anyway, I appreciate the deadspin refrence.

I still have a JanSport bag from the early 1990’s, it’s taken an absurd amount of abuse and the only damage is a half-inch long separation on one seam. It’s been half way around the world and back, soaked wet in rain forests, frozen in sub-zero temperatures in blizzards, baked inside of cars in 115f+ desert heat. It’s been overstuffed and sent through airport security, it’s been stepped on, dropped, kicked, thrown, etc. It’s even been used as a bed by ferrets (only took a year for the smell to fade!). I don’t particularly like the bag so I don’t try to take care of it, and yet somehow that bastard just will not die no matter what abuse I subject it to.

Having worked for a big OR store a few years back I can tell you with 100% certainty that these packs will do well. When JanSport discontinued the “leather line” I had people come in every week looking to replace their 10+ year old pack. The early 90s outdoor set is now 15 years older, probably a lot better off financially and nostalgic for their heyday gear in some ways. I’ll buy one if they’re not crazy $$. You have no idea how many people ask me about my 13 year old TNF pack - with bright blue and red colors ala the Scott Schmidt era.
