Well, I think that in urban areas, bikes could reduce polution that affects people in those cities. If we are going to reduce dependancy on middle east oil and energy, we have got to figure something out. If you want to ride a bike to work, more power to you, but untill gas hits $7/gallon I am not walking, running, or riding a bike since I drive at least 25 min. one way like many other Americans. Maybe that is what it will take for our capitalist system realize there is money to be made in alternative energy and stop playing around. I know there is more to this, but I hate sending my money to terrorist organizations when I pay $3/gal at the pump.

Hey … just sayin i commute almost every day in the summer 35 km’s (like 20 miles) each way. Now i only have to get up an hour earlier and i get home a half hour later than i would have if i had driven (because of the 2000′ elevation gain). Not sayin im anything special but before you say you can’t or do something, why not park youre ass in a saddle for a bit and see what you CAN do.

I can’t speak for all of America, but for me changing from one 19th century technology (the internal combustion engine was invented in the late 1870s) to another 19th century technology, my bike, has reduced my dependency on oil by about 90%. Just sayin’.

I am a pastor and attorney in Chapel Hill, and a life long Republican. Recently one of my students showed me the video of you mocking cycling as a form of transportation. You also demonstrated clasic partisan politics. I ride my bicycle frequently on short commutes to do my part for the environment and maintain fitness. i also get to interact with my community. Your tone and demeanor are child like and mocking. A nuclear powerplant costs over 200 million to put on line. 1 million to promote a safe and healthy form of transportation is good sense. Or havnt you seen the scourge of obesity overwealming our nation? I Sir will do all that I can to discourage my fellow North Carolinans to not vote for you as you demonstrate one dimensional short sighted thinking.

IF (intentionally capitalized) I thought it would do any good at all, I MIGHT not object to such a pointless exercise in flushing (yet more) taxpayer dollars down the federal shitter. But, unfortunately, sadly, pathetically, embarrassingly, by and large, Americans are just too freaking lazy to give a damn, much less ride a bike.
And the few who do give a damn? Well, most of ‘em are already riding bikes, walking, jogging, using public trans and driving their Priuses to work.
The rest? They’re still hurling their abuse (and their empty McCoffee cups, Big Gulps and beer cans) at us lycra-clad “faggot” cyclists for hogging “their” roads.
But, the REALLY sad part of this whole farce is that Americans really could make a huge dent in the so-called “energy crisis” by utilizing some VERY low-tech solutions, which are for the most part FREE. But once the nanny-state bureaucrats (Democrats AND Republicans alike) get their claws into it, they’ll regulate it (to death). Pretty soon we’ll be required to have a federal bicycle licensce; for two “obvious” reasons: A) how else will they be able to give us our $20 dollar “tax break” unless they have some method of tracking our activity?; and B) How else will Homeland Security be able to track the terrorists who ride bicycles in an effort to stay under the radar?
Of course, along with the federal bicycle license (they won’t call it a bicycle license, of course; it’ll something catchier: a Two-Wheeled Adventure Pass, or some such bullshit designed to mask the reality that it just yet another tax) will be the requisite inspections, upgrades, GPS tracking chips installed in the bottom bracket, retina-scanning I.D. locking mechanism (again, for DHS war on terrorism), and the universe-only-knows what other ludicrous forms of regulation they’ll cook up once they’re up’n'running in the “War on Rouge Cyclists”
That said….go ride your bike and pray the feds fail to get their toxic claws into one the last vestiges of (relatively) unregulated activity in America.

FYI DEMS: there are a lot of conservatives (who mostly vote Republican) that are concerned for the enviroment (more than many urban Dems who only talk the talk) so please feel free to bash Republicans as a whole but understand that conservation is an issue that people from all political spectrums can appreciate.
Some of you also might want to keep in mind that Theodore Roosevelt (Nobel Award Winner) started the Parks Department in 1906. He was one of the most conservative Republicans of all time. So when some of you refer to “tax and pollute Republicans” you might pay attention to all that unnecessary road construction PORK in urban areas that Unions push Democrat politicians to call for wish “tax” dollars.
