Proof That Marketing Doesn’t Rule the World
The door closed on this year’s Quiksilver “The Eddie” surfing competition at the end of last week. In the event’s 22-year history, the comp has only been held seven times due to strict wave height requirements. Between Dec 1, 2006 and Feb 28th the wave height never got over 20 feet for a period long enough to call in the competitors. You know some guy in a tie with plenty of pie charts tried to explain why they needed to lower the wave height requirement.

It’s true that marketing has never pushed the Eddie into going if the surf wasn’t huge. The contest could have been held last year in serious surf though, but they didn’t want to compete with the Super Bowl. Likely, some guy with a pie chart called it off.
