First Everest Ascent Coming to Big Screen in 3D
By Steve Casimiro on March 6th, 2013
Using original archival footage supplied by the Royal Geographic Society and two film newcomers as stars, a New Zealand filmmaker is beginning production on a 3D, feature-length account of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay’s 1953 first ascent of Mt. Everest. Called Beyond the Edge — not so original, but whatever — the film cast Kiwi Chad Moffit as Hillary and Sonam Sherpa, now living in Mt. Cook on N.Z.’s South Island, as Norgay. Director Leanne Pooley, who’s clearly been taking marketing lessons, wasn’t humble in her descrip of the movie: “Like the conquest of Everest itself, Beyond the Edge will be a film that pounds a stake in the ground establishing once and for all that Sir Edmund Hillary’s triumph on top of the world wasn’t just a huge accomplishment, but an epic story that helped to define an epoch in human history.” The flick will be released in New Zealand and Australia later this year; wider release hasn’t been set.
