Ski Team Escapes B.C. Ski Lodge Fire
By Michael Frank on February 28th, 2013
Panorama Mountain Village ski resort isn’t near anything. It’s outside B.C.’s East Kootenay and closer to the tiny village of Windermere. So that may explain why a fire that broke out Wednesday around one in the morning managed to pretty much destroy the entire top floor of 1000 Peaks Lodge before an eventual 27 firefighters arrived to contain the blaze. It’s a credit to the firefighters that the entire base village didn’t burn; witnesses say the fire could’ve easily jumped to nearby condos, with flames shooting out the top of the lodge. Damage to the building is expected to cost millions of dollars to repair, but nobody was injured and members of a U16 ski team, who were staying at the lodge to race in the Can-Am Western Championships, still intend to compete this coming weekend.
