Ski Patrol Collision Caught on GoPro

By Rocky Thompson on February 22nd, 2013

It’s hard to tell who’s really at fault in this video since you can’t see the ski patroller until he blasts in from outside of the frame. You can tell the ‘troller is running on some serious adrenaline. “You want to ski here the rest of the day? You sure about that?” In either case, the ski patrol guy comes off as a bit of a dick to the very apologetic guy he hi, though he does thank this veteran for his service when he walks away. Also…the video is over at about 1:30…not worth watching after that.

Doesn’t look like he was making many if any turns, just bombing the hill and it does look like patrol just turns into him. He probably could have avoided it but c’mon its patrol and they need to look around too. It always amazes me when there are collisions on mountains that have no one skiing on them. Would you expect any different response from a cop if they rear ended you if you two were the only ones on the road? Somehow it would be your fault.

Are you guys blind….look at the video again, patrol is leasurly making turns in front of this guy from the start. Sure, the patrol cuts from far right to left, but dowhhill person has the right of way. If you can’t stop, or avoid, then uphill skier/boarder is at fault.

I’m with Griz on this one. “We gotta stay on blacks – I’m just going too fast.” Come on, GoBro, you’re at a resort and you have to play by the rules.

Serious…the dude is a douche. Probably a Private douche first class, but still a douche. Downhill skier ALWAYS has the right of way. I can’t believe BC.com dude says “hard to tell who is at fault?” Really?

I’m with Griz and Andy. Camera man is at fault and violated one of the cardinal rules of resort (and all other) skiing — uphill man yields to downhill man. And that was AFTER he passed the “slow” sign. Could (and should) have yelled “on your left” like the patroller said. Of course, the patroller was a jerk about it, but he does have a point.

Skier Responsibility Code #2: “People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.”

Dude with the GoPro is lucky no one got hurt. He’s at fault. Also, he should learn how to turn.

c’mon how many of you cut across a whole slope without looking up hill. skier code or not, a patroller should know to look around. Also a patroller should know where a roller is and not to undercut it. he knew it wasn’t the guys fault, he was just embarrassed, or else he would have pull a pass.
