Crested Butte Charges Uphill Skiers $10 Per Day
By Rocky Thompson on February 21st, 2013Ski Colorado’s Crested Butte all you want for $10 a day. The catch is that you have to make your way uphill yourself. The resort plays host to about 100 backcountry skiers per day, people who choose to skin the resort for exercise, practice, whatever and then ski down. They’re subject to a $10 per day skin-up ticket, and the resort does offers backcountry gear rentals to folks who want to try it out. On one hand, I see how they can get away charging since these people are skiing patrolled land and benefit from ski patrollers if they’re in need of rescue, but on the other hand Crested Butte is located within the Gunnison National Forest. Hey, that’s our land, and if you’re not charging for lift use, can you really get away charging?

It’s simple. Dont pay.
ski resort owners screwing up again, get ready for a lower skier turnout, there are too many other places to ride backcountry for FREEEEEE
Seems fair. Like paying to use nordic trails. Ultimately skiers will decide if that was a good business move.
Regardless of whether they’re using the lifts or not they are skiing on groomed and maintained runs which costs the operator. As to the point someone made about being in a national forest- many resorts operate within the bounds of a NF which, I believe they pay a fee for. $10 is cheap so quit complaining…
