It’s Official: 29ers are the Kings of Mountain Biking

By Steve Casimiro on February 6th, 2013

29er_470Just like that, you can hang up that baby-wheeled 26er in your quiver. It’s old news. According to 2012 bike industry stats, 26ers sales have dropped like a bottomless endo: off 29 percent in just two years. Meanwhile, 29ers are the new KOM, commanding an average $300 more over a typical 26er. The overall sales numbers were incomplete so it’s not clear how many 29ers were sold, but in 2011 dealers moved 100,000 more than 26ers. And if you’re worried about being left out of the big-wheel craze, don’t sweat it: Downhillers are still rolling 26-inch wheeled bikes. Or you could split the difference and go 650b. Maybe it’s just because I’m an old fogey, or perhaps because I’ve got a whole stable of 26″, but I cannot get excited enough about 29 to try. I know a person who has and he loves it, but he’s a moron and really, if he started pooping out gold nuggets and giving them to me, he’s still be a moron. Have more hopes for 650.
