The Story Behind the Eiger Sanction Alpinist Cover
By Michael Frank on January 31st, 2013
When the editors at Alpinist stumbled upon this amazing shot of Clint Eastwood from the filming of the Eiger Sanction they were immediately struck with the idea of putting it on the magazine’s cover. But it wasn’t going to be that easy. They had to research who shot it, and then, finding out that it was Hamish MacInnes, the 82-year-old Scottish winter climbing pioneer, they had to go through many backs and forths to get a high quality image. But that’s not even the coolest part: MacInnes also submitted an essay telling the back story, which was that Eastwood dangled from a ladder rigged like a diving board so that the photographer could aim his camera through the rungs, then shoot as Eastwood cut the rope and fell (he was caught by safety lines).
