It Must be Winter, Because the Media Says Skiing is Dangerous
By Steve Casimiro on January 16th, 2013
Skier and snowboarder safety is of course important, but when you read the first line of this story from CNN, you might think the story was about drunken cave diving: “As the winter sports season reaches its peak in Europe and North America so the toll of deaths and injuries will surely mount.” Yes, and so will deaths caused by people using chainsaws to cut kindling for their wood stoves. On average, 40 people die skiing each season in the United States, the story says. In context: that’s 0.78 deaths per million skier/snowboarders. Skiing and snowboarding are just not that dangerous, although unfortunately CNN never comes right out and says so. Via CNN.
