Retiring Cycling Champ Blasts Dopers and Cheats
By Steve Casimiro on January 15th, 2013
As you watch the Lance Armstrong’s crocodile tears later this week, remember the words of Nicole Cooke, the British road racer who retired yesterday with a machine gun blast of criticism against those who cheat and those who rationalize it. Cooke, the only rider to win Olympic and world road race titles in the same year, is understandably bitter. In her best year, she made $80,000, compared to rival and admitted doper Geneviève Jeanson, who made $400,000 and will make more from her confessionals. As for doper Tyler Hamilton, Cooke said, “Tyler Hamilton will make more money from his book describing how he cheated than I will make in all my years of honest labor…please don’t reward people like Hamilton with money.” As for Armstrong, she was equally unflinching: “When Lance Armstrong ‘cries’ on Oprah later this week and she passes him the tissue, spare a thought for all those genuine people who walked away with no rewards – just shattered dreams…Each one of them is worth a thousand Lances.” Via Telegraph UK.
