Arizona Snowbowl Finally Makes Snow — And it’s Yellow

By Steve Casimiro on January 14th, 2013

Arizona Snowbowl was mired in controversy over its efforts first to make snow and then to make snow with treated waste water. After years of legal wrangling, it finally got approval to fire up the guns this winter, and when it did the result generated even more controversy: The Snowbowl snow was yellow. Er, um, oops. One young skier called it “kind of disgusting…[it} doesn’t look very clean.” The ski area blamed the coloring on rust in the pipes, but critics are dubious. “Something’s awry, and the onus is on the Forest Service…to protect the public and determine the cause,” said Taylor McKinnon of the Center for Biological Diversity. The treated water comes from nearby Flagstaff and has been found to contain hormones, pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, and other chemicals. Via NY Times.
