Boulder’s Neptune Mountaineering Sold to Chain
By Steve Casimiro on January 9th, 2013
If you’ve ever climbed or skied with Boulder as your base, you know Neptune Mountaineering. The place is an institution, a City Lights of all things outdoors. Gary Neptune founded the store in 1973 and at the time it was mostly a repair shop, re-shafting ice axes, fixing dinged ski edges, waxing, etc. In time it became what it is today: part museum of historical outdoor memorabilia and part old-school outfitter for any kind of adventure. But Gary Neptune has sold the shop to a bigger operation — Austin, Texas-based Backwoods, which runs 14 stores in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Don’t worry, Neptune’s not moving, or changing the name. Backwoods doesn’t want to de-institutionalize Neptune and they’re saying all the right things about why Neptune has worked so long and so successfully in Boulder. Here’s to hoping they keep their word. Via The Boulder Journal.
