Search for Missing Wingsuiter Cancelled
By Michael Frank on January 8th, 2013
Mount Si outside of Seattle isn’t what most hikers or backpackers would consider real wilderness, but Kurt Ruppert Jr., of Lake City, Florida, a wingsuit flyer who made a jump five days ago from a helicopter at 6,500 feet, is still missing somewhere in the area. And after four days of searching in a nine-mile radius that included hundreds of volunteers, sheriffs have called off the effort to find him. Rescue efforts had concentrated on an extensive search of a quarter-mile square area that they said was a potential zone for finding the man based on cell phone and the helicopter flight path data. But there are a lot of factors that don’t play in Ruppert’s favor, including deep snow and tight evergreens as well as cliffs; it’s not a good mountain to land on with a parachute in the best of circumstances, let alone in winter.
