Woman Survives Avalanche at Crystal

By Michael Frank on December 20th, 2012

It’s only December and Crystal Mountain has already received 205 inches — 17 feet — of snow — 4.5 feet in the past three days alone. On Tuesday, that led to an in-bounds avalanche at the Washington State resort, when a woman was buried for ten minutes. Two men skiing with her were partially buried but able to dig themselves out. They immediately called the Crystal ski patrol, which responded within five minutes. The woman was not wearing either an airbag or a beacon. Via Associated Press.

POV footage of the slide and the rescue (which was initiated by quick thinking fellow skiers, not patrol) can be found here if anyone’s interested. Pretty sobering stuff, especially since the women was caught from above while on a low angle traverse back to the resort base.
