Colorado Congressman Wants Re-Routed Divide Trail Open to Mountain Bikes

By Michael Frank on December 20th, 2012

A congressman who gets it? Hallelujah! Congressman Scott Tipton, Republican from Colorado, doesn’t want the Forest Service to bar mountain bikes from sharing a new segment of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail while allowing hiking and horseback riding. It’s Tipton’s district where the new route is being built. “I am primarily troubled by the Forest Service’s preference to exclude bicycles on this new trail. Mountain biking is a very valuable component of the recreation economy — a bedrock of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. This segment of trail, while remote, is close enough to Gunnison and Crested Butte, areas recognized as mountain biking destinations, that it could be a great addition to existing resources,” he wrote. Damn straight! Via House.gov

  1. Code

I just don’t understand how you can allow horseback riding and not allow mountain bikes. I’ve seen trail damage done by horses that mountain bikes could not equal.

  2. Citizen

I agree with you, Code. Mountain bikes poop a lot less than horses.
